The Story of The Relay Crime As told by the Police !

Police have released what's believed to be the first footage of a ‘relay crime’ within the West Midlands that permits thieves to turn back in vehicles while not having to even see the owner’s keys.

The video shows 2 men actuation up outside the victim’s house, each carrying relay boxes. The devices are capable of receiving signals through walls, doors and windows, however not metal.



In the footage, one in all the lads can be seen waving a relay box up front of the property.

The box receives a signal from the key within and transmits it to the second box next to the automobile.

The car’s systems are then tricked into thinking that the key is gift then it's unlatched.

The thieves then turn back, with the complete crime taking only 1 minute.

The Mercedes has not been recovered following the theft, that happened within the Elmdon area of Solihull nightlong on 24 Sept.

Mark Silvester, from the West Midlands Police crime reduction team, said:

"To protect against this type of theft, owners can use an additional tested and Thatcham-approved steering lock to cover the entire steering wheel.

"We also recommend Thatcham-approved tracking solutions fitted to the vehicle.

"It is always worth speaking to your main dealer, to ensure that your car has had all the latest software updates and talk through security concerns with them."

Sgt Tim Evans, from Solihull Police, said:

“It’s important the public are reassured that we are taking proactive steps to tackle this type of crime in Solihull.

“We hope that knowledge of this type of crime will enable members of the public to take simple steps to secure their vehicle and assist us."

What are The Relay Boxes:

• Relays are switches that open and close circuits electromechanically or electronically.


• Relays control one electrical circuit by opening and closing contacts in another circuit.


• As relay diagrams show, when a relay contact is normally open (NO), there is an open contact when the relay is not energized.

Relay's Applications

Relays are used where it's necessary to manage a high power or high voltage circuit with a low power circuit, particularly once galvanic isolation is fascinating.

The primary application of relays was in long telegraph lines, wherever the weak signal received at AN intermediate station might management a contact, regenerating the signal for more transmission.

High-voltage or high-current devices will be controlled with tiny, low voltage wiring and pilots switches.

Modern vehicles are fitted with a steering lock which is an anti-theft device. It is fitted to the steering column usually below the steering wheel. The lock is combined with the ignition switch and engaged and disengaged either by a mechanical ignition key or electronically from the vehicles electronic control unit.
